6 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Home

March 22, 2024

Spring is finally here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to give your home a fresh start with some spring cleaning. Here are six tips to help you tackle the task and make your home sparkle:

1. Start by decluttering

Take a walk through each room in your home and assess what items you no longer use or need. Let go of the things that no longer serve a purpose in your life by donating, selling, or recycling them. Clearing out unnecessary items will not only free up physical space but also create a sense of mental clarity and lightness.

If you decide to donate your items, Goodwill accepts all sorts of goods — including clothing, shoes, books, home decor, furniture and small appliances, among other items — at both their drop-off locations and at any of their retail stores. They won't accept mattresses or non-flat-screen TVs. If you have larger items or prefer someone to come to your home and pickup your items, try calling your local Salvation Army. They accept donations of clothing, furniture, cars, household goods and appliances, and you can schedule donation pickups, too.

2. Deep clean your surfaces

Dust and wipe down all surfaces, from countertops to tables to shelves. Don't forget to get into those hard-to-reach places underneath and behind furniture. A clean surface not only looks better but also creates a healthier environment for you and your family.

3. Refresh your bedding and curtains

There's nothing quite like the feeling of climbing into a bed with freshly washed sheets and pillowcases. Take the time to launder all your bedding, including comforters, and give your curtains a good wash to revitalize them. Keep in mind even if your window coverings are made of a washable fabric, the linings and seams could shrink in the wash. Play it safe and opt for dry cleaning if you are in doubt. Definitely dry-clean curtains and drapes with stitched-in pleats, swags, or other elaborate ornamentation that may not withstand a washing. A fresh and clean bedroom can make all the difference in your quality of sleep and overall well-being.

4. Clean out your closets

Delve into your closets and confront the clutter head-on. Sort through your wardrobe, shoes, and accessories, and bid farewell to items that no longer fit or bring you joy. Consider investing in storage solutions like bins or baskets to maintain an organized and easily accessible closet. A well-arranged wardrobe can simplify your morning routine and make dressing up a breeze. Need assistance in deciding what to purge? Start by discarding anything that is uncomfortable or unworn, especially if your lifestyle has changed from office work to remote. Say goodbye to clothes that no longer fit, can't be tailored, or no longer reflect your current self.

5. Don't overlook your light switches

It may come as a surprise, but your light switches are actually hotspots for bacteria in your home. While a toilet seat may have around 50 bacteria per square inch, light switches can harbor a staggering 217 bacteria per square inch. This often overlooked area is a breeding ground for germs that can easily spread throughout your home. Make sure to add wiping down your light switches to your spring cleaning checklist to ensure a thorough and germ-free environment for you and your family. By paying attention to these small details, you can create a healthier and cleaner living space overall.

6. Replace your air filters

Air filter replacement

As we transition into the warmer months, it's essential to ensure that your home's air quality is at its best. One simple yet often overlooked task is replacing your air filters. Over time, filters can become clogged with dust, allergens, and other particles, reducing the efficiency of your HVAC system and potentially affecting your health. By replacing your air filters regularly, you can improve the airflow in your home, reduce energy costs, and maintain a healthier indoor environment for you and your family. Don't forget to mark your calendar for regular filter replacements to keep your home running smoothly all year round. Need help remembering to change your filters? Put a recurring monthly reminder on your calendar or sign up for an air filter delivery subscription like FilterTime.

By following these expert tips, you'll transform your home into a sparkling sanctuary that is not only visually appealing but also promotes a sense of peace and well-being. Embrace the season of renewal and enjoy the fresh start that spring cleaning brings. Happy cleaning!
