How to Tell If a Window Seal is Broken and How to Fix it

At some point in time, you might find a window seal that no longer works and needs to be repaired. In most cases, window seals fail because of poor manufacturing or damage during the shipping or installation process. Extreme weather conditions with fluctuations in temperature and humidity can also cause a window seal to break. Let’s take a closer look at how to tell if a window seal no longer works and what you need to do to fix it.

Ways to Tell Your Window Seal Has Failed

There are several telltale signs that indicate your window seal is no longer working and requires a repair, including:

  • Freshly Cleaned Windows That Appear Dirty: Broken windows are simply unable to trap dust and dirt. If you’ve thoroughly cleaned the inside and outside of your windows but they still look dirty, dirt is probably lurking between the panes as a result of a seal failure.
  • Condensation Between the Glass Panes: Window seals are designed to create a thermal barrier between the inside and outside of your home and lessen the transfer of heat. If the seal fails, the space between the windows faces direct exposure to temperature and humidity fluctuation. Therefore, visible moisture makes its way between the panels and creates a milky white appearance. This is known as condensation.
  • A Chilly, Drafty Home: If you find that your home is particularly cold every time you stand by your windows, there may be a broken window seal that’s caused air filtration issues. Cold air that leaks around or through your window due to failed window seals may also cause draftiness.
  • Insects: Excess moisture can invite unwanted pests into your home. Small insects between two panes of glass mean that your window seal is definitely broken.

What to Do If You Have a Faulty Window Seal

In the event your window seal is malfunctioning, explore these options.

Take Advantage of the Warranty

Fortunately, most windows are backed by warranties. If your windows are fairly new and still under warranty, you’re in luck. All you have to do is call the manufacturer and ask for a replacement. It really couldn’t be any easier.

Replace the Entire Window

If your window seal no longer works and your warranty has expired, you can replace the window entirely. While this solution will be expensive, it may save you money on electric bills in the long run. A window repair replacement is a smart move if you notice more than one window with broken seals, your window frames are worn out, or you wish to upgrade your home or add curb appeal to it.

‍Fix the Seal

Even though fixing the seal itself isn’t ideal, it’s far less expensive than replacing your entire window. Just keep in mind that if you go this route, your window won’t return to full insulating power. This will cost you more in utility bills over time.
